Derby(WA) -Kununurra (WA) – Arno Bay (SA)

July – September 2026

Left Yukkamunga & drove to Derby, Peter was working for DSS driving a tilt tray collecting broken down vehicles, caravans & camper trailers from the mighty Gibb River Road -long days but he enjoyed it while I worked at Woolworths. We sold the Patrol – a good old girl & replaced her with a Toyota (not quite as old). Derby is quite a nice place & we found the people we worked with amazing. We did a bit of ‘sight seeing’ while in Derby and I think Derby must be the ‘boab’ capital of Australia – there are so many & so beautiful especially on the golf course which is actually called the Boab Golf Club. Leaving Derby we travelled to Kununurra spending a week with family – was awesome, got to go out in Ben & Erin’s new toy.

Next destination – Arno Bay in SA. We camped up at Ingomar Rest area for a night, nothing special but all good. It was a fulll moon & the sunrise was awesome, road trains – WOW! they were long & the road just keeps going. Closer to the coast & slightly inland the Gazania’s were in the thousands along the roadside, unfortunately as beatiful as they are, they are classed as a noxious weeds because they choke out native plants & invade grain crops.

Arno Bay is a small coastal fishing & tourist town located on the eastern side of the Eyre Peninsula on the Lincoln Highway midway between Whyalla & Port Lincoln. Arno Bay is a key hub for grain harvests & the storage facility receives local farmer deliveries including wheat, barley & lentils. The local winter crop harvest typically ramps up between October & December, Arno Bay has historically broken regional receival records during major cropping years & is a popular work place for many people/backpaackers looking for casual work. (which is us). So far here at Arno the weather has been quite fresh & very windy but the beach is still nice. ‘Pancho’ a local snapper sculpture who weighs a tonne & is approx 3 1/2 metres long & made up of more than 1000 bolts, bits & pieces from farms, sheds & even the odd golf club was built by Peter “Turtle” Crosby & lives in the local park & ther are pelicans. 🙂
